Random crashes with Sonic Generations and RadeonPro

Random crashes with Sonic Generations and RadeonPro
I'm getting crashing in Sonic Generations when running with RadeonPro, but not without it. I'm using a Crossfire 7750 setup and use RadeonPro exlusively for the DFC feature (59 fps) on a 60Hz display to remove stutter and get smoothness. The crashing is random, but mainly happens when starting or finishing levels. I'm using the latest AMD 13.x beta drivers.

More system info. Windows 8 Pro x64, i7 3770K @ 4.4 Ghz, 4 GB RAM

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Are you using Ambient Occlusion?

RE: Random crashes with Sonic Generations and RadeonPro
Hi John,

Thanks for the response. I've tried with and without this enabled in the settings (for Sonic Generations of course)

Same problem.

Without RadeonPro enabled the game is stable but slow. My preferred settings are to create a Sonic Generations profile and leave everything as driver default except:

1) Enable DFC @ 59fps
2) Pick AFR-Friendly and drag the slider to the middle mark (Alternate-Frame Rendering).

I've left monitor refresh rate as an empty textbox in RadeonPro, but have also tried 60 and 0. The monitor is a Sony Bravia 1080p panel @ 60Hz (set in CCC).

Another observation is that if I run SonicGenerations.exe elevated, e.g. set Run As Administrator on the shortcut, RadeonPro doesn't intercept the program start and set a profile for the game. Obvious tangent there - just an observation :o)

Can you try without forced AFR? Maybe that option is causing issues, I can't test because I don't have that game installed right now.

Hi John,

I've had some time to investigate this and try various combinations of settings.

All the following were at default global settings except OSD enabled at "Top" to display GPU Load / Temp for the two CrossfireX 7750 cards.

Game display config in Sonic Generations config utility is AA on, all high, Vsync DISABLED.

1) Disabled forced AFR. Left DFC enabled - Crashes

2) Forced AFR enabled. Disabled DFC - Crashes

3) Disabled all tweaks - Crashes

4) Disable API Monitoring + All tweaks disabled - Game runs fine without crashes but OSD not visible anymore

5) Forced AFR and DFC enabled. API monitor disabled - Game runs fine no crashes. Smooth with slight horizontal tearing. No OSD visible however other than 6x MVPU OSD squares (if enabled)

6) Forced AFR and DFC enabled. Tripple buffer enabled. Always v-sync enabled. API monitor disabled - Game runs fine no crashes. Smooth with slight horizontal tearing. No OSD visible however other than 6x MVPU OSD squares (if enabled)

I'm now playing using config 6. Shame about the OSD being missing though. Also do you have any idea about how to reduce the horizontal tearing. The Forced V-sync options don't really seem to help. It looks like sight sync between the two cards as sometimes the 3x squares on the right hand side of the MVPU OSD disappear slightly or they display slight "smearing" horizontally.

I hope this info helps you fix the issue with API detection.

RE: Random crashes with Sonic Generations and RadeonPro
Do you have Steam in-game overlay enabled? If you do, you might try disabling it just to see if your game still crashes.

Per reports some games are crashing when Steam overlay is enabled in tandem with RadeonPro API monitoring. So far I heard of PlanetSide 2 and GTA IV.

RE: Random crashes with Sonic Generations and RadeonPro
Interestingly I think you might be right John - I installed GTA IV two nights ago, before going to bed, and it also unexpectedly crashed. I'll disable Steam Overlay tonight and let you know how I get on.

Are there any disadvantages to having API monitoring disabled?

EDIT: Found the WIKI, doh http://community.radeonpro.info/question...monitoring

RE: Random crashes with Sonic Generations and RadeonPro
Still a crash in Sonic Generations with API monitoring enabled and Steam overlay disabled.
